Alphabeat: 'New album is not wonky-pop'

Stine has revealed that Alphabeat have not made a "wonky-pop" record as a follow-up to last year's This Is Alphabeat.

The term was reportedly coined by Popjustice for its 2008 tour which featured the group alongside Frankmusik, The Clik Clik and others.

Talking about new LP The Spell, the singer told London Lite: "We set out to make an album that's pure pop. Not indie-pop or wonky-pop.

"If a song didn't require guitar, that was fine. All six of us chipped in ideas, then honed them down to songs that were simple and fun and we knew would work live."

She added: "Our biggest inspiration was probably Black Box. Our debut album looked to '80s pop. This one is more about the '90s.

"Most of us are too young to remember '90s pop first time round, so reviving it now doesn't feel odd. Besides, the '00s are nearly over. It's retro already."
