Cheryl Cole has revealed that she offered to leave Girls Aloud when she was convicted of assault.

Cole was charged with a racially-aggravated assault after an incident in a nightclub toilet in 2003. She was later convicted of assault, but cleared of having a racist motive.

The News of the World reports that in Girls Aloud's book Dreams That Glitter, Cole admitted that she offered to leave the band.

She explained that the incident occurred when she retaliated after being accused of stealing lollipops. The X Factor judge also claimed that she didn't know about the allegation of a racial element until a week later.

She added that while preparing for court, she offered to leave the group because she didn't want the other four members of the band to be affected.

However, Cole concluded that the experience had made her stronger.
