She collected the 'Best Song' gong for 'Halo', the 'Best Video' prize for 'Single Ladies' and beat Lady GaGa, Leona Lewis and Shakira to the 'Best Female' award.
However, GaGa was named 'Best New Artist' in a ceremony fronted by Katy Perry in Berlin, Germany.
The only British winners were Pixie Lott, who became the first recipient of the 'Push Artist' award for acts championed by MTV, and Placebo, who collected the 'Best Alternative' prize.
Other winners at the annual ceremony included U2, Green Day, Jay-Z, Eminem and Tokio Hotel.
Notable performances came from Beyoncé, who sang recent hit 'Sweet Dreams', and U2, who performed a medley of classic tracks from Berlin's historic Brandenburg Gate. Meanwhile, Lewis took to the stage for a rendition of new single 'Happy'.
