The former Smiths frontman had been shaking hands with fans at the front of the stage at Liverpool's Echo Arena when the missile smacked him on the head, according to Sky News.
The 50-year-old, who collapsed on stage during a performance last month, said "goodnight" to the crowd before walking off stage.
He had been mid-way through singing 'Black Cloud' when he was struck. Chants to encourage the singer to return failed to prompt a reappearance and an announcement followed which said the concert had been cancelled.
