The 'Hopes And Fears' singer, who won the inaugural ITV1 show in 2002, insisted that he would not have acted differently if he had auditioned for a talent show today.
"I would have always been my own person. I think people could tell that from the time on Pop Idol when I had a bit of a scuffle with Simon Cowell. They saw that I was up for a bit of a fight," he told DS.
"I think British people like honesty and I think people still like the fact that I stood my ground on Pop Idol and then I came out with 'Leave Right Now'. That made people think, 'He's doing what he wants to do'."
Young releases his singles collection The Hits on November 16. New single 'Hopes And Fears' is out now.
