The openly-gay singer kissed a male musician and simulated sex while performing his debut single 'For Your Entertainment' at the annual ceremony in Los Angels.
ABC described the number of complaints as "moderate" and the show's producers are yet to comment.
US media pressure group the Parents Television Council (PTC) posted a statement on their website blasting the show as "tasteless" and "vulgar".
Speaking to CNN, Lambert defended the performance and insisted that the kiss had been "in the moment".
In 2004, over 500,000 people complained after Janet Jackson exposed her right breast during the Super Bowl half-time show.
