Following the MTV VMAs controversy, both artists go head-to-head in the 'Album Of The Year', 'Record Of The Year', 'Song Of The Year' and 'Best Female Pop Vocal Performance' categories, after the major nominations were announced in a televised concert hosted by LL Cool J.
Other artists up for the top album prize are Black Eyed Peas, Lady GaGa and the Dave Matthews Band, while Kings Of Leon's single 'Use Somebody' is also up for 'Record Of The Year' and 'Song Of The Year'.
President of The Recording Academy Neil Portnow said: "The nominations this year truly reflect the talented community of music makers who represent some of the highest levels of excellence in their respective fields."
British bands Depeche Mode and Coldplay have been recognised in the 'Best Short Form Music Video' category, while Salford-based group The Ting Tings are up for 'Best New Artist'.
