The pair did not reveal that they had been an item until after they split in late 2007.
Williams said that she feels bad about not telling the truth, but felt the group's fans might have been upset by their break-up if they had known about it.
Contactmusic quotes her as saying: "Really it was about us being in control of one aspect of our crazy lives. Being really young we were totally dumb and didn't know what we were doing and we were, like, 'Let's just not tell anyone, let's keep it a secret'.
"I mean six months into it, it was nothing, but after a year and a half it was a big story that people were waiting to hear and we kept lying about it because it had gone on for so long.
"It was, like, 'Well, we can't come out now with it because we'd already been telling people that it wasn't the truth'."
The 20-year-old added: "But I think once we broke up and things weren't so dramatic it was, like, 'Wow, it really wouldn't have been a big deal at all to just tell people, yeah, we're dating'.
"The question is whether, if people had known, our break-up would have been a big deal to other people. And I'm really thankful that no-one knew for that reason."
