The 22-year-old overtook Sidney Samson during the week and reached the top spot after selling over 106,000 singles.
Meanwhile, Samson managed to sell over 97,000 copies of his single 'Riverside (Let's Go)'. The Official Charts Company said that such high sales would normally have seen him get to number one and added that over 3m singles were sold in the last week.
Martin Talbot, the managing director of the Official Charts Company, said: "You might expect a sales lull at this time of year, but Iyaz and Sidney Samson clearly defy expectations. To have two singles selling such significant numbers in the first chart of the year is fantastic."
Elsewhere in the chart, The Saturdays climbed into the top ten with 'Ego', while Florence and the Machine moved up to number five with 'You've Got The Love'.
However, X Factor winner Joe McElderry fell 13 places from number two to number 15. Cheryl Cole slipped six places to number 11 with '3 Words', while Rihanna's 'Russian Roulette' dropped down from number eight to number 13.
