The singer has been working with Whibley on the follow-up to 2007's The Best Damn Thing. However, the pair are allegedly finding it "terribly frustrating" putting the finishing touches to it since their separation.
"The first eight songs, Avril and Deryck worked with a lot of love and it came easy. But there's three or four more to do and they just ain't feeling it," a source told Jam Showbiz.
The former couple are reportedly trying to make a compromise production schedule to complete the record, tentatively titled Pink Crust.
"It'll be a terrific album if they can put this aside for a month or so and concentrate on what matters - the music," the source added.
The record, which was originally scheduled for release last November, is now expected to come out in the summer.
Lavigne filed for divorce from the Sum 41 star in September citing irreconcilable differences. The couple were married for three years.
