The bassist told The Times that he feared the group would never reunite before they got back together to play a number of live shows last year.
James said: "I really don't know if the same goes for the other three members of the band, but for me a day hasn't gone by for the past 21 years when I haven't thought about Blur.
"I really thought it was never going to happen again. The longer time went on, the less likely it seemed that we'd ever get back together. These people weren't just my colleagues.
"They were once my closest friends - I think probably the closest friends I'll ever have, and it was a strange kind of limbo. Blur is what goes on my gravestone, no matter what else I do. Alex James, bass player with Blur. "
He added: "Glastonbury was a good gig and the Hyde Park shows were a slam dunk after that really. Even the weather was on our side. They were beyond any doubt the best gigs we've ever done.
"I have absolutely no idea if we'll ever play again. The best way to describe our dynamic is to say it's that of four married men, with all the highs and lows that suggests. If we don't play together again, that's a good place to leave it."
