The music guru, who was part of '80s production trio Stock, Aitken and Waterman, has written more than 200 hits in his career and worked with stars including Kylie Minogue, Westlife and Bananarama.
In a statement, Waterman commented: "Eurovision is one of those iconic competitions that has stood the test of time and keeps coming up with great acts, great tunes and great performances.
"Life's full of challenges and I'm relishing the opportunity to put my own stamp on this one."
The act that will perform Waterman's song is expected to be selected on a forthcoming BBC TV contest, though no firm details have yet been confirmed.
Eurovision 2010 will take place in Oslo, Norway in May.
