The star was a jobless pub singer in the Welsh valleys when he decided to see a careers adviser.
According to The Sun, Jones failed to impress employment support worker Roger Dinham at the local labour exchange.
"He said he was going to be a big pop star. I thought it unlikely," Dinham said.
"I said I didn't care and he should get his backside to the factory. I'm glad he ignored my advice."
Sir Tom has since sold over 100 million records worldwide and has a reported fortune of £175 million.
