According to a mailout from manager Ryan Gentles, the follow-up to 2006's First Impressions of Earth will be helmed by Joe Chiccarelli.
Gentles said: "We're pleased to announce that the band is officially back in the recording studio with producer Joe Chiccarelli making what will be The Strokes fourth studio album.
"I wish I could give you a release date on the album, but it's changed so many times, best to just wait and see after we've wrapped up all the recording and have a good plan on the best timing, so, let's just say 2010 for now!"
He added: "Thanks for sticking with us, everyone! We hope to give you an exciting year of music!"
Chiccarelli has previously worked on releases from The Shins, The White Stripes, Morrissey, Mika and The Raconteurs.
