The singer, who secured seven Top 10 hits with the girl group, admitted that she purposely took time out before launching a solo career.
"I've been trying hard to find a sound that defines me and shows my growth since Mis-Teeq," she told Digital Spy.
"I experimented with some different things and also took a little break from the music scene as it was mad hectic. I needed time to reflect and refresh myself."
The 31-year-old claimed that her first solo single 'OMG' reflects the overall sound of her upcoming solo album, provisionally titled Dirty Pop.
"The lyrics are quite in-your-face and tongue-in-cheek. It's all about having fun in the world as is right now," she said.
"I wrote it with Ali Tennant, who's worked with Britney and JLS, and we have a really good chemistry. When we went into the studio with the producer, Labyrinth, the next day, we knew it was a hit."
Washington releases 'OMG' on March 22. Her album follows later this year.
