Students involved in the scheme have until September to submit their best track, with the Brit judges choosing a shortlist from which the public will vote a winner.
Grime star Tempah told Metro: "I think it is a brilliant, brilliant idea.
"When I was at school all I wanted to do is be a musician but you are not really aware of your options or avenues or how to go about being a musician."
He added: "So obviously the 'Brit Class Act' award is a perfect platform for people to have an understanding and an idea of how to put a band together or to get a project together for a certain deadline."
The award has also been backed by Beatles producer George Martin and Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan.
