The Tonight star revealed to Australian radio station Triple J that he has harboured the idea for some time, although is yet to put pen to paper and start the project.
"I did have this amazing idea, I've been keeping it a secret for ages!" he said. "I think it would make an amazing musical."
Kapranos went on to say that the mooted musical would focus on a modern celebrity.
He explained: "The thing is, what would make a great musical would be to pick a contemporary figure, like somebody from either current times of the last ten years. Somebody who's had a big impact. And write it about them."
Kapranos maintained that while he has a firm figure in mind for the production's subject, he would not be drawn on their identity.
