The US rockers, who reunited in 2008, have announced that Avery will be replaced by former Guns N' Roses star Duff McKagan.
"That's it," Avery posted to fans on his Twitter page. "With equal parts regret and relief, the Jane's Addiction experiment is at an end."
Guitarist Dave Navarro later tweeted: "Yes, Eric Avery has left the band. More to come but we wish him all the best!"
Meanwhile, singer Perry Farrell added on his own feed: "Slipping out of that shell of a past. Gripping; wow we're onto something faster now. And so worth the wait. It's the art of great escape."
The band are expected to return to the studio to record their fourth album soon.
