The Eurovision star was recruited for the chart-topping girl group in September after founding member Keisha Buchanan was ousted from the lineup.
Revealing the full impact of the controversial move, Ewen told Company magazine: "The loyal fans weren't so willing to embrace me.
"People shouted abuse at me in the street. I remember thinking, 'Maybe I've made a mistake'."
The 22-year-old recently confessed that she felt "restricted" when she first joined Sugababes and was affected by the criticism she received after making her debut for the band's single 'About A Girl'.
Sugababes release new album Sweet 7 on Monday.
