The Texas star recently released The Movie Songbook, an album of songs from film, but explained that working on original music is still important to her.
"I'm a songwriter," she told The Times. "I don't know how else to express myself.
"I'm loud and noisy about some things, but then very quiet about things that matter to me. It's as if I can't tell anyone."
Spiteri admitted that she wrote her 2008 album Melody after breaking up with Ashley Heath, the father of her daughter, but added that she didn't mind people hearing such personal feelings.
"I have this weird approach to songwriting and sort of believed no-one would really hear it," she explained. "Also, I know it sounds like a sad album, but really it's full of my versions of the stuff I like to listen to: Nancy Sinatra, Tamla Motown and the like. I thought it was very positive."
