The promo, which was premiered last Thursday, has clocked up 14 million hits in just three days and is the most watched clip on Youtube.
According to the Daily Star, only an edited version of the nine-minute video can be shown on MTV and other channels after it was considered too 'sleazy' for younger viewers.
'Telephone', which climbed 19 places up the singles chart yesterday, sees GaGa thrown in prison and stripped by two transvestite prison guards, before covering her body with police crime scene tape.
She is quoted as saying: "I wanted to take a decidedly pop song with quite a shallow meaning and turn it into something deeper."
