The band suggested that they were prevented from making the record available to fans as a free download following its recent leak.
A statement on their website read: "Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us.
"We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn't make sense to anyone but us."
MGMT, formerly The Management, had previously made the track 'Flash Delirium' available as a free download.
