The 'She Said' singer revealed that he started his career in music aged 11 when he wrote a track for his friends' fledgling group E7.
He told Radio 1: "I think from age 11 I attempted writing my first song. A group of friends of mine were just starting a boyband up called E7 because East 17 had just had a hit with 'Stay Another Day' so I was like, 'Oh I'll write for you'.
"I was 10 or 11, I remember going home and writing them a song. I didn't have any music or anything. I don't remember what it was about, but that was my first attempt and I knew I could do it from that age. Then I was at school and I stopped playing football and started getting into girls and music, that just took over."
The star - real name Ben Drew - also said that growing up around an eclectic range of material helped develop his current genre-bending approach to making music.
He added: "When I grew up, there were lots of different types of people - you had the grungers, the metallers then the jungle fans and the garage fans, I never stuck to one type of music. Michael Jackson was first, then it was The Prodigy then, with where I come from in Forest Gate, in East London, jungle was big, then I was into stuff like Radiohead and Tracy Chapman."
