The Coldplay frontman claimed that the words of wisdom helped boost the band's success in the US.
He told Q: "What's the best piece of advice I've been given? Michael Stipe from R.E.M. once told me to wear tighter trousers. We did and we had a number one in America."
Martin also revealed that some of the props the group have previously used on stage have not always been well-received by his fellow bandmates.
He added: "We had a Chinese dragon's head on stage last year. I came off stage and said, 'God, that dragon bit was good, wasn't it?' The rest of the band just stayed quiet."
