The singer, who was celebrating the end of the band's Latin American tour at the weekend, was stopped and questioned by Mexican authorities over allegations that he had been drinking in public - a criminal offence in the country.
Kapranos wrote on Twitter: "Just been busted by Mexico City cops for drinking tequila in street. All fine."
The 'Take Me Out' star escaped with a small fine, and later posted a joke about giving the police a US $50 bill, which features a portrait of former American president Ulysses S. Grant.
"My American friend Grant sorted it. My friend Grant, for those who haven't met him. Mexican cops seem to hold him in high regard," he said.
