Green Day play surprise Broadway set

Green Day have surprised American Idiot Broadway theatregoers by performing an impromptu gig at the end of the show.

The rockers jumped on to the stage on Thursday night and played a rendition of the musical's title track, reports MTV .

"This is my first night on Broadway," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said.

The band also performed their song 'Basket Case' from the Dookie album before taking a bow with the cast.

They received a standing ovation from the crowd, which included U2 guitarist The Edge.
