The singer, who triumphed over Gareth Gates in the final of the show's first series, insisted that it took him over two years to accept that he had a record deal.
On watching tapes of his Idol win, he told Instinct magazine: "I'm not mortified, I love them. Weirdly, for like the two years after the show I actually watched them a lot because I couldn't believe that I'd got a record deal.
"I couldn't believe it was actually going on. I had to look at it and remind myself that it had actually happened."
Young recently expressed delight over his single 'Leave Right Now' being chosen as this year's American Idol exit song.
