Stereophonics singer Kelly Jones has expressed his "shock" at the death of ex-bandmate Stuart Cable.

Jones - who branded the news "surreal" - knew the drummer since childhood. The pair shot to fame after forming the rock band in 1992 with Richard Jones. Cable was sacked from the group in 2003.

"I cannot begin to tell you what we've been through together as friends and bandmates," said Jones.

Cable, who died today at the age of 40, was due to perform this Saturday with new band Killing for Company.
