The 48-year-old singer, who recently gave birth to her second son, Levi James, recorded the cover for her new album, 100 Miles From Memphis.
Crow, who was a backing singer on Michael Jackson's 1988 world tour, told Billboard: "We were recording an unreleased track by Marvin Gaye called 'Desperate Situation' and it was in that range so I just busted into ['I Want You Back'] and the band followed.
"When it was done everyone was like, 'What in the world?! We've got to put that on the album!'
"It's definitely an homage; [theirs] was the first album I ever owned, and the guy gave me my first job in the business and was incredibly generous with his talent with me."
Crow's new album also features collaborations with Keith Richards and Justin Timberlake.
