The producer and songwriter was hospitalised after the crash in Los Angeles on Saturday and was forced to cancel his upcoming European tour.
Music journalist and friend Larry LeBlanc spoke to Lanois on Tuesday and told The Globe and Mail: "He just said, 'Look, I got a lot of broken bones'. He's always an 'up' person anyways."
Lanois's label confirmed that he had called off all "promotional activity... due to the severity of the injuries" but added that he will be released from intensive care "soon".
His new group Black Dub have delayed the launch of their debut album, which will now be released "when circumstances permit".
David Crosby recently told Rolling Stone that Lanois has been working with Neil Young on a new acoustic album.
Lanois has picked up production credits for his work with U2 and Bob Dylan.
