Macy Gray has revealed that she didn't think her breakthrough hit 'I Try' would be a success.

The singer, who won a Grammy for 'Best Female Pop Vocal Performance' for the song in 2001, said that she is amazed people still know the lyrics to the track because she initially didn't think it was catchy enough to be a hit.

She told Grazia: "When I wrote my biggest hit, 'I Try', I didn't think it was a big deal. Too wordy, not catchy enough. So I was shocked when it became a success.

"And ten years later people still know the words - that's probably been the biggest surprise of my life. On YouTube people play it on ukuleles."

Gray's fifth studio album The Sellout is out now.
