The 52-year-old Australian singer, who has fronted bands such as The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Grinderman, received a degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Dundee for being a "visionary maker of songs, stories, books, films and poetry".
According to AAP, Cave told students at the university: "Go out and fail spectacularly," later saying: "This is an absolute honour for me. My father was a teacher and my mother also worked in the school, so the family has a background in education.
"However, I went into tertiary education and failed, so it is good to finally have a degree. This one is for my mother, who will be very pleased."
Cave got his first degree from Monash University in 2008.
