The singer, whose new single 'Tightrope' features Outkast's Big Boi, performed a cover of the late jazz singer Roberta Flack's 'Tonight I Celebrate My Love' with the comedy actor.
Ferrell entered the stage during the US cable television awards ceremony as Jeff Vuvuzela, in reference to the vuvuzelas at this year's World Cup.
He joked: "I've just recorded an album with the amazing Janelle Monáe. Janelle, let's do track [number] 40. We've got to give the people what they want."
'Tightrope' is released this week, and is available as a free download through iTunes. Her album The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III) will be released later this year.
