Hugh Laurie has signed a deal to record a blues album.

The House actor, who taught himself to play the guitar and piano, will release the record with Warner label WME, according to PA.

"I am drunk with excitement at this opportunity," the 51-year-old said. "I know the history of actors making music is a chequered one, but I promise no one will get hurt.

"I am particularly thrilled to be working with Joe Henry, who has produced some of my favourite records of all time, and I can't wait to get started."

Henry has worked with artists such as Elvis Costello and Solomon Burke, and has written songs for Madonna and Madeleine Peyroux.

Laurie's album will be released this autumn.
