McFly have revealed that they were inspired by Prince and Michael Jackson on their new album.

The group recently announced that the first single from the new LP would be 'Party Girl'.

Tom Fletcher told the Daily Star: "We realised all the songs we’d been writing early on could have gone on the last album and that we weren’t doing anything new.

"It made us decide to challenge ourselves to do something completely different. We wanted a drastic step in the other direction.

"A couple of the songs in that early bunch that stood out for us had a Prince and Jacko influence and that’s what we wanted to aim to be like - the great pop acts."

Bandmate Danny Jones added: "[Producer] Dallas [Austin] took us to clubs when we were meant to be working in the studio. We were out with him one night and he said, 'I need a phone', and then sung into it.

"He played it back the next day and it was so amazing it turned into our first single 'Party Girl'," he revealed.

The group will release the single on September 5.
