The former Verve frontman was performing a set at the Spendour in the Grass event with his new band United Nations of Sound in Queesland.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that just 15 minutes into set Ashcroft kicked his microphone stand and threw a tamborine at a drum kit before walking off the stage.
A source said: "It looked as if someone in the crowd or a photographer had upset him.
"He stormed off and 15 minutes later an announcement was made saying that Richard Ashcroft wouldn't be returning because he had lost his voice."
