The DJ/producer told BBC 6 Music that he has been playing from inside a sphere on his latest tour to try to regain some of the mystique he may have lost in recent years.
DJ Shadow said: "How long will the audience tolerate me being hidden - but also I wanted to take it back to how I started out, when there was more mystique and I didn't talk on the mic as much, it was something different.
"I don't think I can ever be that sort of DJ that's pumping their fist and getting the crowd really geed up in that way, it's more about the music I'm playing and less about me."
Of his decision to play live ahead of the release of his fourth solo studio album, he added: "I've seen a lot of bands play in between albums and use it as an opportunity to try new things and then go back into the studio and make the changes based on what they feel the audience responds to.
"I'm actually really grateful for the opportunity to have that, because I've never really done that before."
