The 'Choices' band's frontman told Metro that some people may have "struggled" with the "fun element" of the group, which saw their fans attending gigs in fancy dress.
Sparkes said: "We were most concerned with not being boring. By doing that you make some bold decisions and don't get everything right.
"We weren’t striving for mediocrity - but we found it anyway. Before, we were really nice guys; this time we’re going to be a right bunch of c**ts."
Asked about the band's upcoming second album The Illusion Of Safety, he added: "We didn't want to come back with the same sound. Pop isn't what it was three years ago. It was more guitary then.
"We were aware we had to change but we ended up scrapping an album's worth of songs. It had sounded as if I was singing over a backing track and lost that live band sound. We needed to bridge where we'd come from with what we wanted to do next. It meant we were away for 18 months."
