The Girls Aloud singer is said to have signed a deal with label Sony and hopes to record 'kooky' music, The Mirror reports.
A source said: "Nicola got bored of waiting for the girls to regroup, so she thought why not give it a go as a solo star?
"She wants to do something different to the other girls - something kookier and cooler. She’s an original girl - and the label want to utilise that fact with her music."
Girls Aloud's official website asks fans to stay tuned for more "exclusive Nicola Roberts news coming soon!"
Last week, Roberts re-launched her make-up range for pale skin, called Dainty Doll.
