The former Libertines star is due to release the record in October.
The musician told XFM: "I was so relieved. It was my first sort of guilt-free project. There's no baggage that comes with the whole band thing anymore. It feels quite liberating.
"I'm really happy with the record. It's the first record I've made that I can go back and listen to straight away."
He added: "It's the one which is the biggest departure from what I've done in the past. The subject matter of the song is about giving that life up. I thought it's a nice way to start moving on."
