Chris Brown has reportedly insisted that his tears for Michael Jackson were real and not faked to gain sympathy.

The 21-year-old singer appeared on stage during the BET Awards earlier this year and became very emotional while performing a combination of Jackson songs. It was rumoured that the star broke down to win back fans he lost after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

In an interview with MTV News, Brown said: "A lot of people don't know I was going to see Michael Jackson the day he died.

"I was on my way to the Staples Centre to see him the day he died. When I heard 'Man In The Mirror', the words started speaking to me in my personal life.

"It just touched me. It wasn't fake. I know people were trying to put extras on it, but everything was genuine. That was my ultimate apology, hands down."
