Grateful Dead to allow downloading again

After a huge backlash by fans after the Grateful Dead shut down a free downloading website, the band have decided to allow downloads of their live performances again.

Internet Archive, a site that catalogues content on websites, has reposted fans' recordings of the band's live performances, after they conceded to public opinion. The band has always been amenable to "tape swapping" of fan recordings of their live performances, but shut down downloading of computerised versions earlier this month.

However, after a petition by fans that begins "The internet archive has been a resource that is important to all of us. Between the music, and interviews in the archive we are able to experience the Grateful Dead fully", the band has conceded and allowed downloading to begin again.

The band disbanded in 1995, following the death of lead singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia, although the remaining members continue to perform in various guises.
