The Vogue editor invited GaGa to perform at the May event but was dismayed by the singer's pre-show antics.
Recalling the incident during an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, she said: "We had Lady GaGa this year.
"She was communing with God and she was praying in the back, waiting for God to tell her it was alright to go actually on stage."
Wintour went on to reveal that it took organisers over 45 minutes to convince GaGa to come on stage.
"I always talk to God, too," Fallon joked.
"Whenever he says I can start the show. He books a lot of acts in New York City."
