The X Factor judge, who is currently recording her second solo album as well as appearing on the talent show, apparently does not think that the band will be able to record new material for at least a year.
An insider told Heat: "Cheryl is tied up with her solo success. She's in no rush to get back with Girls Aloud.
"She realistically doesn't think they'll get back together for at least another year, and perhaps even longer."
The magazine also claims that bandmate Harding is "desperate" to reunite the group in order to re-establish their friendships.
The source explained: "Sarah has realised that the issues within the band can be resolved and she wants the girls to get on like they used to. She thinks a night out for the five of them will help them get things back the way they were.
"Sarah just wants to make a go of the band now and really have fun, because it might be the last stint they do together."
Reports of a rift between singer Nadine Coyle and the rest of the group have previously cast doubt on whether the band will reform as a five-piece in future.
