The funk-influenced band are currently receiving positive reviews for their new single 'White Knuckle Ride'.
However, Jay Kay has admitted that without the distraction of his helicopter lessons the band's future may have continued to look uncertain.
He told The Sun: "I really needed some time out from it all, so I took two years off and learned to fly a helicopter. It's like f**king physics, man.
"I got tired of the whole process of promoting singles: Ant & Dec's show; Top Of The Pops; another single; Ant & Dec's show; Top Of The Pops - and so it went on again."
Jay Kay is also known to be a fan of sports cars and motorbikes.
