The former Orange Juice frontman releases Losing Sleep, his first album fully written since he was hospitalised, on September 20.
Collins told Metro about his most recent songs: "My lyrics are now simple. Backward, maybe, ha. They used to be very flowery. Now they’re direct and focused and repetitious and precise.
"When I first started talking after the stroke, all I could say was 'yes', 'no', [my wife's name] 'Grace Maxwell' and 'the possibilities are endless'. Over and over again."
Of his changed singing voice, Collins quipped: "I actually think I sing a lot better now than I did on the early Orange Juice singles. My voice was awful on some of those tracks. Awful!"
