Bob Marley's family have been unsuccessful in their battle with Universal Music Group (UMG) over copyrights to the musician's recordings.

New York Judge Denise Cote decided that UMG own the rights to five of the late reggae star's albums.

Marley's wife Rita and his children believe that UMG has been mistreating the catalogue of songs by making poor licensing decisions, while also withholding royalties from the family.

However, Judge Cote ruled in favour of UMG, which is the parent company of Marley's label Island Records, saying that the firm has rights to the recordings under US copyright law.

The recordings, made between 1973 and 1979, include hits such as 'One Love' and 'No Woman, No Cry'.
