The I Blame Coco singer, who is the daughter of Sting and Trudie Styler, admitted that she worked from a young age to fund her music career and played instruments in private.
"When I was 17, I worked and saved up all my money to get the white labels pressed up, it cost about £300 to get 500 copies," she told Recognise Magazine.
"There were always instruments around the house but I kept my playing very secret. My favourite instrument is the piano. I started writing songs at the age of 14 and after a while started performing with Ben Hudson."
Sumner also revealed that she used to stay late after school "to avoid any photographers or media attention".
Discussing her new album The Constant, she said: "Expect a 13-track album of dark pop record with dance elements. I think it will be good for the winter."
Sumner releases her debut on November 1.
