Joe McElderry has revealed that his new single 'Ambitions' changed the direction of his debut album.

The X Factor winner told Scott Mills Official that his LP had more slower songs on it before he recorded the track which has become his next release.

"It was going in a totally different direction before we got this song," he said. "It was a lot of slower songs and it was kind of like, I was enjoying it but nothing was really grabbing my attention."

He continued: "Then we got this song and I was like, 'Oh my god, I love it, I think it's great'. Then we went into the studio and I assumed that the key would be changed, [but] the producer said, 'Well actually we're going to try it in this key'.

"But it worked out well and I found a totally different range of my voice and it took me on a different direction and I love it so much."

The 19-year-old admitted that he is still nervous about the single, despite a positive response.

"It's got a great reaction, which I am really happy about," he said. "The video's going to be out soon and all the promotion starts and it's a really exciting time, but I am really nervous."

McElderry recently shot the video for 'Ambitions' in Bulgaria and told Mills that he had a "cheeky routine" in the promo.

"Yea, there is a little dance routine," he said. "A cheeky routine which is great, which I really enjoyed doing. I was used to singing so many slow songs on The X Factor, which I don't mind - I loved singing them - but I just thought, 'I'm 19, I want to have a bit of fun on stage and I just needed a few fast songs'."

'Ambitions' is released on October 11, followed by the album Wide Awake on October 25.
