The Glasgow-based band's new record features contributions from Norah Jones and actress Carey Mulligan, and the group were asked by The Guardian who else they would like to work with.
They claimed that violinist Sarah Martin wanted University of Manchester professor and ex-D:Ream star Cox to appear on their sleeve but suggested that he was too busy to feature.
Frontman Stuart Murdoch asked: "But anyway, can Cox sing?" Martin replied: "He can play keyboards!"
The band's own keyboard player Chris Geddes quipped: "Ohh. Oh okay. Okay, I'll take a hit for the team. So what am I supposed to do then? Just f**k off and do some physics? This band's going to break up over Brian Cox."
Writing on Twitter, the Wonders of the Solar System presenter replied in response to the article: "I'd have been on their album cover - they never bloody asked!"
